Welcome!

Who We Are...
School Counselors are specially trained professionals who have unique qualifications and skills to address all students’ academic, personal/social and career development needs. School Counselors help to maximize student achievement through collaborating with parents, teachers, administrators, and community members and are capable of using many preventive and immediate intervention strategies to work with students who have a variety of needs. Middle School Counselors have even more specialized knowledge to be able to help students navigate the difficulties of adolescence. In addition to the challenges associated with a transition into middle school, our students often face numerous trials and tribulations as their minds and bodies begin to mature, their friendships change, academic classes become more rigorous, and their future becomes more salient.
The term "guidance counselors" is considered outdated, with "School Counselors" considered to be the much more acceptable and appropriate term. With origins in vocational guidance, which focused on the matching of aptitudes and abilities to specific occupations, the profession has been transformed by decades of change to counselors' duties. Today, Professional School Counselors focus on the holistic development of students, rather than career placement, and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program that focuses on the success of all students and ways in which student achievement and overall school performance can be maximized.
What We Do...
In order to maximize student achievement, School Counselors work with students on an individual basis, in small groups, or with an entire classroom. Together this year, we have delivered classroom guidance lessons on bullying, healthy relationships, and career exploration, to name a few. We have also conducted numerous small group counseling sessions on topics such as Social Skills, Identity Development, Academic Skills, What It's Like to Be a New Student, and Body Image. We also work with students daily on peer mediation, scheduling conflicts, and issues with parents and teachers. Some of the more serious issues we deal with regularly are suicide and abuse. We work closely with resources in the community when students have needs beyond the scope of services we can offer.
At Davis Drive Middle School, we follow the National Model for school counseling programs promoted by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). Click here for more information.
